Gearing Up For International Women’s Day Next Week….

Wednesday 8th March 2017 

Doncaster’s Corn Exchange 10.am -3pm

Women across the global will stand united for change on Wednesday 8th March and we’re proud to be partners in a town centre event collaborating with Doncaster Council, Doncaster Women’s Aid, Doncaster College and the Real Junk Food Project.

2017 marks a turning point in Doncaster’s ‘herstory’ as brilliant females are taking leading roles in our town. This event will provide an opportunity for people to showcase what they do from small businesses, creative projects, artwork and campaigns.

Here’s a taster of  who’ll be there on the day of far….

Jenny Dewsnap 

Jen is one of the #DonnyLegends behind our annual Pride festival, she is also a leading member of Doncaster’s Town Centre Team whereby she’s works in Tourism and Destination Marketing. We proud to have Jen speak on the day about both Pride and her role as a women leader at Doncaster Council.

Hannah at Dreambakes

Hannah started Dreambakes from scratch with her mum from their home in Bessacarr. We love this girlboss team and enjoy watching Hannah’s creations over Instagram and social media.

Proud Gypsy Traveller Project

Paula Nicholson and Violet Cannon are both Romany Gypsy women who have worked together for the last 5 years representing the Gypsy and Travellers communities in Doncaster. The project Proud Gypsy Traveller has aimed at promoting and informing the wider public of the true heritage of Gypsy and Traveller Culture in Doncaster.  Paula and Violet will also be speaking on the day too.

My Network For Women South Yorkshire 

This is a network group for self-employed women from all social and ethnic backgrounds in Doncaster. We’ve attended one of their networking events and discovered this crew are truly awesome, not only wanting to develop their careers but also help each other along the way too.

Katrina Sadrak 

We love Katrina! A Fine Art painter who manages her busy schedule as a mum and PHD student studying at the University of Poland. Katrina will have some examples of her work on display at the event along with prints by international renowned artist MATU, who is best known for her  unique, large-format paintings using roller-skates rather than a brush.

Doncaster Women’s Aid 

We are proud to have Doncaster Women’s Aid at this event who will be holding a jumble sale on the day to raise money for their emergency life saving phone line. Louise Harrision and members of the Women’s Lives Matter Campaign group will be speaking on the day, sharing their story on how they saved this life saving service for Women in South Yorkshire.

War On Tour 

Doncaster’s 1914-1918 project will be presenting their world war on tour exhibition focusing on the role of women during the first world war.

Abi Nielson – Craftivism 

Abi is a Sheffield based visual artist who specialist in textiles – she’ll be running a craftivism workshop in the day.

Real Junk Food 

This will be a brilliant opportunity to meet Fiona Cahill founder of Doncaster Real Junk Food  project Doncaster and discover how many tons of food waste have been saved from the landfill and how you could take part in the brilliant project.

Donny Suffrage Project 

We are MEGA excited to see this project launch at International Women’s Day. Starting as a twitter chat last the Donny Suffrage project aims to explore the role of Doncaster Women in the Suffragette movement.

We love this new creative business, and all these cuties will be for sale on the day! Designed and handmade by  up and coming creative Sarah Stanley.

Book IT 

Sheila Nasea of Doncaster Radio Show BOOK IT will be showcasing the work local writers work. The #DonnyLadyLegend runs a monthly radio show at SineFM whereby she supports and encourages local authors and writers.

Julianne Bowden 

Our issue 12 cover artist and creator of the artwork on the international Women’s Day poster,   Julianne studied at Doncaster University Centre and has grown from strength to strength since graduating in 2015.

Maia Weerdmeester 

Art student Maia will be showcasing her work titled Chaos In Theory,  which has recently been on display at Scicluna Delicatessen, she is currently studying her BA Fine Art and Craft at Doncaster University Centre.

ABOUT THE EVENT

This is a grassroots brought together in a few months inconjunction with Doncopolitan’s partnership project with DMBC.

We  hope the event creates the opportunity for people to network and showcase what they do and that we can make the event a fixture of the Doncaster Town Centre calendar.

We want everyone who takes part in the event to help steer next years event so that it becomes bigger and better each year.

Tea and coffee will be on sale on the day and we encourage people to visit Real Junk Food Project on Scott Lane for lunch or other restaurants or cafes around the Market area.
